Tale of two cities

Was in two Malaysian cities for two of the past three weekends, with two different groups of people.
In JB two weeks ago for Adrian's wedding! From the get go we decided that we would stay for the night, although for varying reasons - some purely because they don't want to go back late at night and having to clear customs and what not, some because they foresee lots of drinking and so it's more convenient to stay, some just want to explore JB a lil bit. Got discounted price for the rooms as part of Adrian's wedding package, though we left it quite late before confirming the rooms.
Adrian had arranged 霸王车 for us prior to that and therefore the one hour trip had a road trip feel to it, pretty enjoyable. Hotel room is really good and the weak ringgit made it even more worth it lol. Shopping at AEON's supermarket was just hilarious. DY ended up doing grocery shopping (sort of), rest started stocking up for after party necessities, egged on by Leo's pretty convincing "buy lah buy lah". And have to avoid going "wah so cheap" out loud...have to remain low key a bit in front of the locals.

Was supposed to wake up for breakfast the next day with partner in crime DY but since the rest are up early too after an alcohol-induced restless night (and we only had 3 breakfast vouchers)..decided to head out for bak kut teh brunch instead. Which was a bit of a pity coz HuiJin told us afterwards that the buffet spread was pretty good. Oh well. Went back to check out, then cabbed to CitySquare to walk around a bit..trying unsuccessfully to hunt for Athena's bday present and attempting to do indoors laser tag (duno where we get the energy from) but giving up coz of the waiting time (and the staff's attitude). With nothing much to do we headed back at about 3-ish and that's the end of the JB trip!

Inspired to go for another road trip in the same group in the near future but I think the enthusiasm will die down soon as usual :/
Two weeks later...KL trip! Idea was first mooted in Jan when we (the CVE kakis) did escape room in SG.. where EH commented that it was way cheaper in KL and we self invited ourselves to KL and crash in her studio. After that everybody got busy, we kind of forgot about it and only started talking about it again in about June, then scheduling conflicts pushed it back to October. Tickets costs a bomb though. $150, oh well at least saved on accommodation.
Booked the latest flight on Friday night coz EH had classes till 9pm and had to rush to airport from NUS. Flight got delayed and it was about 12.30 when we arrived in KL. Got a cab (family van coz there are 5 of us) and driver got a bit lost trying to find EH's place despite directions from Waze (and EH wasn't very helpful coz she got lost herself lolol). But amidst the haze we reached their studio in Bangsar South (which turned out to be a serviced apartment) safe and sound to be received by Mr Chow himself.
Despite the very late night we managed to drag ourselves awake for dim sum breakfast at The Ming Room. Trip was supposed to be filled with activities and games (after a long week at work, I was starting to doubt why I signed up for this :/). After breakfast, did Breakout at NU Sentral, Terraform had an interesting storyline with good puzzles but we failed it coz we spent too much time on one of the puzzles sigh. Decided to go bowling (I managed one spare yay), darts, board game (Betrayal at House on the Hill) and more snacks and dinner (bak kut teh wasn't great at all) and mini drinking session (gosh). All within one day!

Ventured to Midvalley next. Was supposed to do laser tag (!) but decided against it coz needed to wait. And had to play with this bunch of teenagers, we decided we were too old to have a chance AHAHA.

Special thanks to Mr and Mrs Chow for hosting! Takes a lot of effort to plan out the things for us to do and bringing us around. Couldn't be happier for them and looking forward to next year's Ipoh trip for the wedding already. :)

Dining fine

The day after my birthday..I was supposed to meet up with Stel and KH again. Was told to dress smar casual for the occasion.
Urgh the thing about smart casual is I never knew where the line between causal and smart casual is. Anyway I pulled on a shirt and jeans and headed over to Swisssotel. Didn't research on what is there because I like being surprised hahaha.
Turns out I was being treated to my first every fine dining experience, at Jaan Restaurant on Swissotel's 70th floor. Cool! Always wanted to do that. And it turns out they only managed to confirm the reservation on that morning itself, via KH's close uni classmate who is now working in Swissotel.
Award winning restaurant yo! One of the best in Asia. Check out their awards and accolades here. Was afraid that I would do something embarrassing at first lol but KH the experienced was there to settle everything for us. Even asked for the wine menu first (our server later commented that this gave him away as "someone in this field" lol). We ended up having sparkling water and the very safe moscato..honestly sparkling water just felt a lot like water trying very hard to sparkle (be gassy) but fell short so it's a bit of a strange sensation. Moscato was quite nice tho.
Went for their 3 course lunch. There were 3 choices per course and three of us, so we decided to each pick a different one so we had the variety. Server later commented that this is the first time she had to explain all the dishes to the same table haha.
Anyway, straight to the food. Didn't get any photos of KH's food coz he was too far away. Had Stel's coz she didn't have a good phone to snap pictures with and had to resort to mine hahah.
  This one I do like it though. Cèpes Sabayon and Mushroom Tea which was poured from a French press. Pretty intense mushroom flavour.   Stel had milk poached white asparagus with organic egg yolk ‘Raviolo’, burnt bread, “Grenobloise”. KH's one was a Zucchini ‘Trumbetta' - Burratta artigiana, tomato ‘collection’. Yes I copied straight from the menu because I cannot remember what we had by now. Not that the meal was not memorable, just that this happened a good 1.5 months ago hahaha.  On to the main courses! I really liked mine. Confit rainbow trout sitting on top of Kagoshima pork with miso caramel sauce. Fish was really well done.  Stel's Welsh Organic Lamb 'Rugh Estate' which featured various cuts of lamb and orient caramel, violet artichokes, quinoa. Interesting plating. KH's was Spring barley ‘Comme Un Risotto’, with grilled avocado, brocciu and frog legs.  Topped up a bit for a supplement of truffled brie de Meaux. Not as gaga about cheese as Stel, but this also came with...   Palate cleanser of refreshing blood orange, grapefruit and pomelo granita with pop rocks. Down side was that the pomelo bits were bitter.  Then dessert course! Start with mine, which was one of their signatures, Choconuts Tart, with tempered chocolate treated at different temperatures. So it was warm, there was cold ice cream, soft mousse and crunchy nuts. Many textures going on and but complementing each other. Very enjoyable. 
Stel's Strawberry ‘Feuilles a Feuilles’ with Gariguette strawberries, fromage blanc, lemon. KH's was named "Exotic' - had pineapple, banana 'cheesecake'.
 Oh and there's coffee after that too. Stel regretted for not ordering something fancier like cappucino or sth coz she didnt know she could.

Generally...it's an experience I won't mind reliving somewhere else. The food was great, portions were typical fine dining portions but the pace was appropriate and I even felt slightly full afterwards, which I wasn't expecting to. Service was excellent as well. I am a firm believer that service and food should both be good for a restaurant to excel and this one have both. Another strong suit of theirs is of course their location on a 70th floor which offers magnificent views.
Anyway for the record..birthday weekend continues with two of them..we had Nihon Mura for dinner (just Stel and me coz KH was attending a concert with his friend), then Victor's Kitchen for brunch on Sunday and accompanied KH as he ran errands etc. Was only able to set up my new comp on Sunday night lol.

The month of lasts

So to pick up where I left off the last post..life after the crazy thesis chionging period is over.
It's almost a stroll to the finishing line. For the second semester in a row exam week resemble nothing like one..slacked a few days where I did medical checkup for employment pass application (declared fit though the HR called once to check about my colour-blindedness and my future boss (I think) called to check about my psoriasis sigh). Then san (very much like val last sem) very spontaneously made a trip down to sg. She's done wif her exams and in fact just waiting for convocation coz her results were out too. Given that its her first time in Singapore...its a perfect excuse to act tourist for a few days. Places like Merlion Park and Sentosa (like beaches, not just RWS which is the main focus these days). Lol. Food is the main agenda too (even though food in KL is way nicer). Guess I can pass off as an ok tour guide? :P

Oh so before that..Settled accommodation within 3 days. Have been keeping an eye on houses and booked three units in Jurong East for viewing on Friday night. Turns out the first and the third are the same unit but advertised under different agents =.=. And out of the two units we viewed, one was dubbed as "heaven" and the other as "hell"....seriously contrasting in every way man. In the end decided to go for "heaven" (though its slightly pricey)...confirmed with agent on Saturday (after a fair bit of drama) and signed agreement on Sunday. Hahah process was kind of fast but I guess it's not bad? So that is one more thing settled and I can go home earlier in May! Right...so after san left...time to hit the books again for one last exam..Accounting. I suppose having cheat sheets kind of helped...wasn't familiar with the second part of the module. Though didnt reli study too hard wasnt in the mood already...and the paper was quite ok in the end. Had final FYP presentation the next day, kind of last minute notice coz a friend of mine swapped with me the day before, coz she needed more time to digest her freshly collected data and we had the same examiner and prof! Yep guessed she needed those extra days a lot more than me and I have done my slides anyway (even though I havent rehearsed at all) and I would very much prefer to end earlier. In the end wasnt really in the mood to prepare too...and presentation went..ok? Like went quite smooth coz the examiner, unlike last time during interim presentation, didnt interrupt me and I gained momentum as I spoke...then suddenly out of the blue he went "I...I...I disagree." Heart sank la seriously and we proceeded to debate a bit which sort of ended with sth like me agreeing to what he said and continued with my presentation. I mean its not bad like kena shot from head to toe, but I think it wasnt well done in that some of my theories and methods were criticized. Sigh. Hastily made some changes, thought prof would want to look through one more time but turned out he wasnt really interested..didnt ask me about it and wished me "all the best" when I went to get his signature for submission clearance form...took it as a signal that he won't be seeing me anymore in the future so went ahead to get my thesis printed and hard-bound. Heh. With all official work done...post exam plans in full swing! JCube and IMM on Friday after presentation, Grad Night costume materials hunting with Chris on Saturday, and moving rooms on Sunday. Moved and packed at the same time so took forever, ended at 1am =.=

Farewell, the room I stayed in for almost two full years.
Grad Night on Tuesday, first time seriously dressed up for a D&D/prom-ish event. Theme was Greco-Roman so I went as a Greek or was it Roman commoner-trying-to-act-as-a-rich-man. Cloth was kind of expensive coz I got them from Spotlight =.= but it's all in the name of fun la. An enjoyable night...highlighted by first ever CE lucky draw prize! And its the grand prize! Never won anything from all those CE Days, Safety Days etc...but better late than never. And its perfect for my upcoming Grad Trip (for which planning progress is really about 30% oops).

Didnt really feel too sentimental that night...even when the final video was shown..thought it was really well done and I probably would appreciate it more if I was more involved..yes it has been four years, but I was never very close with my coursemates. Still a handful of them whom I have never spoke to even though I know who they are. I still remember one of my coursemates whom I walked past one day (he was coming from the opposite direction) and I sort of waved AND HE IMMEDIATELY LOOKED THE OTHER WAY. Yeah so duno whether its my problem or his but point is for some reason I seldom attempt to broaden my social circle and try to get to know people better. Of course it's my fault...and its something I will always regret..since there are very few of such gatherings in the future. Nua-ed on Wednesday and visited their Poster Presentation on Thursday...opted out of it coz the A+/A wasnt important to me, didnt one an extra thing to bother me and frankly I thought my project wasnt really worth presenting. Rather spontaneously went out with them at night and spent half the night under the starless sky just chilling out and chatting at Vivo rooftop. :) Met up with the remnants of the McNair gang for Japanese buffet at Irodori on Friday night...another great catchup session! :)    Off to Malacca tomorrow! :P Labels: around singapore, FYP, NUS, outings |

Final Semester!

Unlike previous semesters...where nothing much happens in the first week of classes and we usually just waltzed through...final semester started with two intense days of chiong-ing FYP interim report. Okay actually the bulk of the text has been completed a few days ago...then went to meet Prof, found out that he didnt even look at what I sent him before I went home in December despite replying my email. Coupled with the fact that he went overseas for a week after I came back..I can only meet him on the Friday before semester starts.
Guess what? He was surprisingly encouraging and kinder this time round. I was to update my road and rail freight capacities with data from countries worldwide too instead of just Indochina countries. It is a bit of problem because even though I have them, there are bits and pieces of missing data everywhere and it took me a while to finish updating the table (which I think wasnt very satisfactory lor), to be exact, the night before I was supposed to submit the report. I think the positive thing about the meeting was that I found out that I dont have as much things left to do for my project as I imagined (but then, you never know, because IMO he changes his mind very frequently and then blames us for not understanding what he said). Submission day: went for lectures until noon, wanting to touch up the report after I get back...then LAPTOP DIED. It has been having problems starting up and waking up from sleep mode since November last year, then recently the problem escalates and I try to leave it on for longer periods...then the auto shutdown problem appeared..and when I wanted to work on my report...auto shutdown -> startup -> open word documents -> auto shutdown again after a while -> repeat. It wont stay on for more than 5 minutes! Panicked and went over to PC Cluster to finish up the report, very hastily, then submitted. Gah. Hopefully I have better luck and dont get killed in presentation. :( **************** FYP aside...taking three other mods this semester, decided against taking any TEs in the end...maybe will just crash the Transport Policy classes..dont want to sit for exams and or projects or policy debates etc. A final semester where i dont have any engineering modules (other than FYP)! Didnt expect that. HR2002, Human Capital in Organizations, is the last mandatory module I am taking...tried it out back in Sem 5 and because of project deadline clashes with Engin Prof and CE3101 I dropped it...got a different tutor this time round, probably more interesting but the topic is still damn boring urgh. At least taking it with my reunited CE gang (minus Winnie who took the mod alr)! Probably makes it so much more bearable. First class of the semester was actually ACC1002X - Financial Accounting...hmm a bit different from what I expected, but I suppose its interesting also..hopefully can score :) More interesting was French, at first sort of dragged into taking by Stel...who ended up not having enough points for it and still appealing for the module (and chances look slim too :S)...went for fist class and found out learning new language can be soooo interesting and fun. Probably gonna end up taking alone...which isnt very ideal coz its better to have someone to practice with mah...but no choice lor. Hope the enthusiasm doesnt die out haha. **************** Finally get to visit Marina Barrage! Last Saturday, bravely abandoned FYP for a day. Bought kites, first time flying a kite that actually stayed in the sky for at least 5 minutes. Although admittedly the kites are somewhat lacking in quality (or maybe its just us)...string snapped and kite flew away and got damaged...the second one fared better but couldnt fly properly after a while too..and a third kite, someone else's, landed in front of us and nobody came to claim it so we adopted it. Haha! Was fun while it lasts. Dinner and jalan jalan at Marina Bay, Fullerton area..was a nice ending to the vacations. :)

Been back for almost a week now...but still, didnt get as many things done as I want...was about to launch into a "shouldnt have come back so early" whine when i found out prof went overseas this week and didnt really told us about it, but then managed to shake it off as "fated to come back to do work"...even though ended up not doing much. Oh well.
So last day of 2011...joined Cass and Winnie for dinner and dessert at Ion (味香圆snow ice! <3) then head over to Marina Bay for New Year fireworks! First time since 2006/07. Reached there at around 930pm, tried to walk over to the Helix Bridge but got scared off by the crowd...so picked a decent spot near Makan Sutra instead and sat down..forgot to bring anything to pass time so we just chatted..for about two hours? Countdown time..then fireworks..which was quite nice to be honest. Really picked a rather decent spot to watch..couldnt really see the lower ones properly but we didnt come at 5 or 6pm so cant really complain. I forgot how horrible it is to get to the nearest MRT after the show though.

So gonna rent a room at MBS next year and have a countdown gathering...perfect view, comfy, airconditioned, and dont need to squeeze with all the people to get back home! 平安夜

平安夜，很像过到不怎么平安，不怎么 silent.
先是为了单独驾车出去，再加上夜归，所以妈难免又念了一番，尤其是父母上个月经历了他们人生中最严重的一场车祸，虽然说伤都复原到七七八八了，但像妈的个性，难免会胡思乱想，什么worst case scenario 都想得出。说实在的，被念了一轮，就算明白她的出发点，也难免会埋怨一番...人家驾车技术虽然说没有很老练，但是正常情况下是不会出错的嘛(上次也是因为她在耳边喋喋不休，分心造成的咯)。干嘛对我那样没信心嘛。另外一点是担心有路障，其实我以一个外地人的身份，手持外国护照和驾照，驾驶汶莱登记的车是没犯法的嘛。被拦下也不怕咧。搞到每次回汶度假时，和朋友出门，总是有个非正式的curfew，都怎么大的一个人了还有curfew，个人认为是有点难为情咯。明白儿女虽然长大了父母还是会牵挂的道理...但是总该有放手的时候吧? 今天出门时刚好碰上她心情不好(刚和姐"吵"了一轮)，所以还是很无辜的中到"炸弹"...心情还蛮不爽的， 可是还是忍住了没有顶回去...只是在街上发泄了一番，横冲直闯，回来时再次做了spoiler,提早走...还好回家后碰上她心情好转，主动谈起下午发生的事...(妈:"我有一直‘ngam’(就是念的意思) 咩?")...于是借机反映了一下做儿子的心情...出乎意料的获得认可+一个拥抱 :) 可是多两天又要回新了...下次回来应该是打回原形了吧? 哈哈希望我的推测是错的吧.... 觉得身上的顽疾成了谢绝酒精的一个好借口，本身本来就没有很爱/想喝，搬了这个富丽堂皇的借口出来每个人就自然明白了也不会多问，而且又不是在说谎阿，很好也。或许这是唯一的好处吧... 说到不平安，要回家时，刚踏出铁门外就被两只张牙舞爪的野狗追..这次回来只外出两次，两次都被狗追，第一次也不知怎样闪得那么快，刚好把那只看似温驯的小狗挡在车门外，今天就糟一点，转身跑回碧雯家时因为鞋没穿好所以被绊倒了，狼狈样全部被人看完了，还好野狗不敢跑进她家范围内所以才没有遭殃，也奇迹似的没有擦伤手脚...最后还是她哥的朋友们护送下才顺利的回到车上..丢脸事又添一桩... 就这样度过了短短的两星期...后天又要回去面对一些不想面对的事情和人..想到就颇emo的，还好不到一个月就过年了...只是不知道那时又会不会为了FYP而烦恼...一方面想重头开始，一方面又恨不得它马上结束...唉... |

Holidays

Havent even posted anything since, uh, before i ended exams.
So for the sake of wrapping things up...traffic flow paper didnt turn out too bad. At least from my point of view, got everything done, wasnt completely sure about half of the paper but my two other batchmates didnt have much clue either so we just shrugged it off together. How convenient =.= Oh well at least that wraps up Sem 7..FYP excluded. Went for the Titanic artifacts exhibition the next day, costs $20 and I think its pretty interesting..even rewatched Titanic beforehand to get a feel of it before entering the exhibition..exhibition covers everything from construction process and ended with the knowledge that the remains of the ship will vanish in another 40 years or so as the metal is being eaten up by bacteria. One of the main attractions, the recreated Grand Ballroom staircase..its a pity I didnt get to spend much time on it as there was a photographer stationed there, getting you to pose for a picture once you enter the place and asking you to leave immediately after =.= And another totally random one called "Singapore in 1912" (when Titanic sank) showing pictures of some local streets and a couple of newspaper clippings...but everything else was pretty ok...not eye opening, but enough to interest me. Found time to catch two movies..."一泡而紅" with Stel, by local star Michelle Chong in her first attempt at producing and directing (and starring in) a movie. Considering its her first attempt...I didnt reli mind the pacing problems (was a bit too draggy in the middle and the ending was a bit too skimpy), was rather funny too (though I really hate those people who laugh at nothing in particular) but I duno if I am an authentic enough Malaysian to comment on her mimicking of the Malaysian Chinese accent...sounds overdone to me. "那些年，我们一起追的女孩" is a movie I have been itching to watch simply because there are too many good reviews even from the ang moh pai people...and I went alone one fine night..really not bad..good mixture of humour and inspiring stuff, I guess it appeals to many people because it is something that they can relate to..and even set me spending some time thinking about stuff.. Even found time to volunteer for Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore this year, as a baggage crew at Harbour Front...a totally new and exhausting experience. In short we collect belongings of runners and transport them to the finishing line...about 20k of them doing the half marathon route and it is estimated that half of them have bags to deposit,and we ended up collecting only 3k + bags? Many people who are still in the queue for bag deposit half an hour after the race started were told to go home because they have missed the race..and there were some unpretty scenes...here's my take. Either come earlier (because we spent the first hour after the counter opened pretty much doing nothing because the arrival rate is so freaking low), or just dont bring a bag, or a small one to keep necessities like a change of clothes maybe. I have no idea why some of them have to bring such huge and bulky bags which took forever to pack..and imo the people packing in my team were kind of slow I guess. But still..coming early is the best solution. Also found it strange that the organizing team were not very familiar with manpower deployment, because we were told that we had to handle baggage claim at the finishing line too..and when we went back to the Padang there were another fresh team of volunteers waiting there. Turns out we dont have to do it anymore and they themselves were not very clear of our roles? Zzz. Not that I dont mind getting released at 830am instead of 130pm though... And didnt find time to go for the CVE4 chalet..although right until around 20 hours before I was planning to go..then had a traumatizing time at FYP meeting that totally demoralized me and made me really emo...completely my fault (because I didnt clarify enough and got blindly sent to the wrong track) and I suppose I didnt take it seriously enough...in the end rushed out some more things for him before going home..but I am pretty sure I would fear these weekly meetings more than ever from now on. As for now..holiday at home...internet connection at home has gotten worse each time I go home and I duno why...sometimes loading a normal page takes forever :S. Learning to accept the fact that holidays are not meant to be holidays for final years...and the feeling of not wanting to return to Sg is stronger than ever. Sigh. Weeks 7-9!

Haha procrastination owned me again :S
Quite a number of things other than work happened...work was not very demanding as usual, other than last week when the engineers had a supposedly high-workload task to be completed by Friday afternoon and to their dismay, I took one day off (more on that later)! To compensate I actually stayed back till 7pm on Week 8 Friday to make my life easier when i come back...like their faces when they were leaving and they saw me still working lol. Turns out time pressure works well with me and made me a lot more efficient than usual, even though I was fighting another bout of flu. Heh heh. Task completed with one day to spare :D *********************** 6-7-2011 I guess you just have to be prepared for someone to leave, abruptly sometimes, when he/she/it has reached a certain age. It's just too bad that he couldnt wait until I return, but I guess I wouldnt want him to suffer (i was told that he was, during the last few days of his life) any longer. Wont be seeing you anymore, I am sure you are at a better place now, but will definitely miss you dearly. *********************** Submitted FYP choices and Design Project choices. All there is left is to sit back and wait. Oh, and I guess it is a bad thing when my senior in the company asked me about my FYP and I cannot remember the full title of my first choice project. ************************ Hosted KH twice in a matter of four days...first, when he came back from HK after his attachment there, landed in sg at night and stayed over for the night... I was working the next day, so we didnt go anywhere and he went home the next day...then two days later, he is on the move again, this time to Sydney for exchange! Sigh envious..the guy has travelled around almost half the world already. Took leave on Monday to accompany him (considering he took almost a week of leave to bring us around HK/Macau when we were there, one day is really nothing lol). Anyway the only attraction we managed to cover was MBS, (he arrived on Monday afternoon and left on Tuesday morning), for a nice dinner, okay maybe not as nice as the price suggests but still not bad, and a visit to the casino of course...not much, but still good time spent with a good friend :) ************************ Friday nights have officially became my lonely/single/whatever night out....covered Sg River and the Downtown area twice, almost wanted to walk over to Sentosa one week before deciding that I am too tired. Have been to these places numerous times, but I can never get bored of them :) Find it super relaxing to have music blasting in my ears (funny how relaxing and blasting can coexist) and just sitting down and taking in the view. :)) ************************ Visited Commencement only once this year, the ME graduates', and none of us could withstand from visualizing ourselves in one year's time...."what shall I wear", "should i cut my hair", "i want flowers!" etc etc. One year left, and into the working world we go. ************************* And to think that everything will go according to plan...no, unfortunately we are not POLITICALLY CORRECT ENOUGH. We didnt make hall sound like a safe heaven to parents where their children will be pampered. For goodness sake if you dont approve of these activities in the first place, why not stop them?? And why leave until the very last minute, when books have been printed and are to be delivered the next day, and you majestically raised up your hand and say (command), "return them and reprint." You have no idea how we felt like strangling you the moment we heard about it and you really cant blame us about it - WE WERE SO CLOSE. ************************* Officially declaring Radio 1003 as my favourite radio station in Sg. Lol! They were giving out movie premiere tickets/sneak preview tickets and last week they were giving out tickets to none other than HP7 Part 2!! So during the afternoon session giveaways they will play this game..not until the last day of the giveaway did i seriously try to win tickets...didnt manage to get anything from the morning session...then played the game in the afternoon session and managed to pick up the song!! And got picked as the winner! Woah! Lol first time won something from radio station after several attempts muahaha. Spent the entire Saturday out from 8am to 11pm. Wow now that's what you call weekend. Whee~
Started the day with a tour organized by my SS module prof..every student is supposed to go for at least one of the series of tours around Singapore (related to module contents of course) and I very predictably signed up for Civic District Tour. Yeah coz it involves touring my favorite "emo place" even though it's during daytime (night scenery is so much better). Anyway, started off with the Arts House (used to be a Parliament House ages ago), then walked along the roads all the way to Marina Bay Sands while pausing here and there to listen to prof's "lectures" on the history and ideas behind those constructions. Under the baking hot sun. Whoosh. Snapped pictures like a tourist hahaha. Think I might need to revisit the place soon because I wanted to write about the sights and sound of Singapore River for my term essay and need inspiration and pictures. Shall do that at night :)  Tour started at this point. The black elephant statue given to SG by King Chulalongkorn, standing in front of the Arts House now.  Artistic shot - SY Style - of the Old Supreme Court  Stopped briefly at St. Andrew's Cathedral to hear more about neo-gothic architecture.  Caught a shot of the CBD as we were leaving.  The two 20th century buildings pretending to be 19th century buildings, according to prof.  Tan Kim Seng fountain, shifted here from the junction of Battery Road. Took a pic of it coz I just saw a very very old pic of it couple of days ago while researching for essay.  Entered the Esplanade and I just had to take this photo of the inside of the durian. Yay I love CE.  Spanking new MBS.  CBD! Prof was happily talking about this area and suddenly went "eh, where did the merlion go?" and the whole group went "It became the Merlion Hotel". Lepak a bit around Marina Square and Suntec while waiting for Stel who was supposed to join me for the rest of the day's adventures. Headed off to Pizza Hut for lunch coz we had coupons for free personal pan pizzas. Haha cheapo. Next stop, IT Show 2011 at Suntec Convention Centre! I wanted to buy a camera since last sem and finally decided to get one during this IT fair..plus some other gadgets. Crowd was crazy as usual (come to think of it, maybe crazier, guess everyone is doing well economically?). Headed straight to the camera company booths to grab some brochures..price was my only main concern as a really good camera probably will just go to waste in my possession. Initially targetted a Sony camera..but after playing around with it didnt like it too much for some reason. Ended up at the Samsung booth and they have a couple of nice promotions..tempted me. Sat down somewhere and pondered my choices while Stel went to buy her Mac stuff...eventually decided on a Samsung model but when we went back to the booth..we were just in time for their daily promotion hour. Wasted a good half an hour waiting for the first model to be sold...the promoter damn chiong hei lor..and we din dare to move coz we were at a rather good spot. Thankfully the second model promoted was the one that caught my eye...and they suddenly dropped the news that there were only 10 sets remaining. Cue lots of squeezing and raised arms waiting to grab the offer paper. "Going for $249!!!" *grabs paper* FAILED TO GET ANY *tries again* SNATCHED ONE PIECE YEAHHH. In fact I accidentally grabbed two pieces instead of one. Threw the other piece into the air on the whim and and Indian lady who had just given up caught it in surprise. Wow must be her lucky day. First time involved in such intense "fight" and left with a sore chest (i think i overstretched myself) and my new toy :) Din even have time to buy other stuff! Wanted to buy handphone pouch, headphones and a new memory card for my phone. Zzz. Coz we were behind schedule alr.  Free pizzas!  My new toy! :):) Walked to this place in Bugis area to try out Tom's Palette. Supposedly a really good ice cream parlour with original flavours and NUS students get 10% discount. And it lived up to our expectations! Medium cup with two flavours for $3.30 only. Other shops probably sell for $5. They have a lot of flavours but they rotated them..as in you see different flavours each month or something. Really friendly staff too! Thumbs up. (Why do I sound like I am writing a review?) Forgot to take pictures though. Took a bus to St. James Power Station to visit....  Won myself a pair of tickets for her live showcase..she is in town promoting her new album. Thought I was one of the privileged and lucky few until we reached there at around 5+ and the queue was already 100m long. =.= Okay I think i exaggerated a bit but you get my point. Luckily we ended up standing at a rather acceptable spot...not as near as the earlybirds but good enough to see her clearly and snap nice pics. :) And her live performance is awesome! (Some singers can only record well) Mostly songs from her new album except a couple from a previous album when she was accompanied by live piano and violin. Niceeeee. The organizers even slotted in a segment where a male fan tried to surprise and propose to his long time friend. Ultimate corny lah in my opinion and the girl din even look impressed or touched. Plan failed? Whatever. Fish Leong is awesome, that is what's important. Hahah.  First time in a club. And i wasn't there to club.  Camera took surprisingly clear photos :)  Think she was singing 可惜不是你 here. Went over to Vivo/Harbour Front Centre for dinner and a bit of window shopping..had dinner at this Vietnamese restaurant and even tried Gong Cha (贡茶)...was not bad...pics below.  Stel's Chicken Wrap @ The Orange Lantern  I went for Chicken Curry. Yea I am not very adventurous. Burnt a hole in my wallet as a result and was damn tired at the end of the day =.= But yeah an enjoyable day out wif the bff and I got to see one of my favourite singers live and I got a new toy.
