Hengmui

First post of the year (yeah it’s March).
Highlight of the year so far was part 2 of San and Kev’s union...or at least part 2 where we are involved coz I think there’s a small one in Sibu the week prior where 女方请客. Oh yea for the uninitiated, part 1 a.k.a ROM happened last year in October, which was one of the 2 KK trips I made last year. Anyway, we were to be hengmuis (jimuis that have guys in the entourage lol), which was something that I suppose was set in stone since Sec school? So this is the one which I envisioned us spending quite some time on hahah but in reality we did nothing till maybe one week before lol. Talks of hens trip, hens night all went up the chimney in smokes coz of various complications la. I remembered panicking about it like just after Christmas and called for a teleconference which surprisingly everybody made it, and we at least got the general program flow of the big day established. Then lo and behold, everybody except the bride herself was in Bru during CNY so more jimui meetings! Though our involvement at that point had withered down to jimui duties in the morning and performance at night during banquet coz the bride and groom settled most things themselves alr (including teapot lol I duno why I kept remembering this). Even this we took a long while before deciding which song to sing hahaha, it went from three performances (a duet + KH violin/Val 彩带舞 LOL + one group performance) down to one group performance. Then had to find a way to practice together, settled on Smule and we tried out our parts, sound ok and just left it till we are able to meet to rehearse. Hahaha relaxed much. Actually panicking la but it’s not like we have much choice so. And one last teleconference session to tie down gatecrash games details.
Said jimui meeting in KH's office lol
Too soon and wedding weekend is here! Arrived in KL a couple of days early, not much shopping except buying materials for gatecrash games, then accompanying the couple to restaurant to recce out the place for performance and finding that we need to revise our 走位 for the big performance coz they only had two mics. Also need to complete our jimui attire too so there’s a bit of shopping there. Dropping by San’s “bridal suite” to finalize some details. Prepping for the games and testing them out ourselves to ensure that it’s not as bad (or rather to ensure that it’s devilish enough). And of course nightly rehearsals including the night before where we rehearsed till 130am coz we did facial while practising too hahaha and had to keep breaking to wash our face and apply a new coat.
Spotted this on my first day in KL and brought Stel over the next morning for a quick pick-me-up before prep day begins in earnest. Poor San/Kev thought it's some kopitiam when we asked them if they need tapao and they asked for ikat tepi lolol. Wished I had more time here tho! Food looks promising, their insta account was goodd.
Popped by banquet restaurant for recce and ended up having lunch there.
Prepping bittergourd juice.
And trying it out yucksss
And we woke up 3.5 hours later at 5am whew. The bride herself also got roughly the same amount of sleep whew weddings are tiring all right. Prepped and headed over to San’s, luckily they planned well enough such that everybody is close to each other - Kev’s place, San’s bridal suite, our Airbnb, church. Even had time to pop by Kev's place first to collect San's contact lenses which she needed and left behind. Only place that was far is the banquet restaurant but that’s ok la. So it’s a short drive and we reached there a bit later than we intended to at about 645am, though the groom and brothers were even later - supposed to reach at 7 (or maybe leave at 7?) but they only arrived at 745am. We had plenty of time then but if I had any regrets, it’s that we didn’t take enough photos during this time!
All ready to go! (chose this pic coz I looked slim heheh 8 months of work yo)
Prep in full swing at San's
Backstory (she texted us while make up was ongoing) is that she thinks the MUA made her look overly mature hahahah so she wasnt too happy with it.
Final prep for the games
Tadaaaa. 酸甜苦辣 - Lemon wedges, cordial (straight from bottle without adding water), bittergourd juice, Maggi Pedas Giler, emphasis on x2!!!! (Val insisted must have x2 coz she says otherwise the normal pedas giler not pedas at all, it was a bit tough to find though duno why, we half heartedly wanted to buy one more pack to try but couldnt find it anymore)
Quick breakfast before the brothers arrive
Have time for photos but not enough photos laaa. We didnt even have individual shots with her!
Formal ones by photog
Posing sia.
Bridesmaid duties.
We entertained ourselves while bride got some individual shots
Honestly I think she 有意无意chose a good AirBnb with plenty of instagrammable opportunities.
Manning the door and asking for angpaos (thank god for KH I don't think me/Stel/Val could have managed it the brothers came prepared)
The cordial turned out to be the worst LOL I legit thought they were acting but no. Broke out in sweat over Maggi so they couldnt really taste bittergourd after that and breezed through it (man should have made them take bittergourd first), lemon rejuvenated their tastebuds and they struggled thru cordial hahaha
Yoga pose!
Needed help but got through it alright
Bride disapproving the 爱妻宣言 lol
Success!
Tea ceremony (with dad and mum on vid call next to dad)
No hard feelings yeah
Welcome to the fam!
Stel and Val had extra duties throughout - Stel helped with tea ceremony, Val was the resident live streamer coz San’s mum had to give this a miss due to COVID concerns. Then both also joined the march in during the church ceremony. Nvm shall not say much about the church ceremony coz I think even San herself wasn’t too serious about it, this was more of Kev’s family taking it very seriously. And honestly by this time we were already really tired and the day is not even half done so pretty much stoned throughout the service.
Think Val was a bit stressed leading the walk in coz she sets the pace.
One after the whole thing
Lunch reception for the church wedding attendees while the couple served tea to relatives on the groom’s side, then we left and went home to rest. All knocked out like a light except for KH who was diligently working on a surprise speech and also somehow squeezed in a violin practice. Still amazed how he had the energy for that. Meanwhile the rest of us overslept (the gals at least, coz they had booked a salon appointment to style their hair). Which led to a mad rush to get ready for the banquet, coz, in our minds, we had to go help set up or sth. In the end there was very little that we needed to do for the banquet. Got kicked out unceremoniously of helping registration because we don’t know most of the guests so Kev’s cousins took over. Left to do ushering but uhhh what’s there to usher? For my part after setting up the laptop for slideshows etc there’s nothing much to do. And we can’t rehearse coz guests are here alr (we did kind of do a fast run through before guests started arriving). Even the angpao collection box we prepared was thrown out eventually coz it’s apparently good attraction for robbery (ok fine legit just that it’s not something we are accustomed to think of). So we just chilled inside the bride’s powder room with her (who also didn’t want to go out and socialize coz she also duno most of the people).
One inside the powder room which is just for resting la and counting angpaos (still don’t get why angpaos must count immediately)
KH providing walk in music
Banquet was pretty much a standard affair with Stel panicking over her progressively weak voice lolol what has this performance done to all of us (KH too suffered through a voiceless bout coz apparently the day he flew in he just had an episode at home where he raised his voice on a co-worker/family member and overexerted his voice chords?). Then planned program was a bit off too so we didn’t know when’s a good time to perform which adds on to the anxiety? But hentam la.
Here’s stel panicking about her voice going in the midst of yamseng hahaha
Sooo it’s not too surprising the performance turns out to be a train wreck hahahahah. In our opinions our practice sessions are better (and those weren’t exactly high standards too so that shows how off the actual performance was hahaha). But I think we had fun on stage la and had fun dissecting our performance later on. San had fun too (I think) so no complaints there.
Forever Looooooovvvvvveeeeee
Table photo minus the two photogs
Post event, we didn’t manage to take any proper group photos too
Day after was spent on completing individual errands, moving to a hotel (coz our Airbnb is due for check out on that day) and hanging out with the couple for tea after they complete their obligations, and more chit chat sessions over dinner and post-dinner where we managed to kidnap San over to our hotel, sans Kev (who went out to yumcha with his brothers too). Which was a session I’ll remember for a very long time :)
Stumbled on a yet to be opened tea house near CSF during our visit, vowed to return and we did. Was a good catchup session which was actually more juicy outside the teahouse than inside coz...Kev had left by then ahahah.
Stalked San who had family (the new one) function to attend - back to The Sphere we go and settled on this Spanish tapas bar. This cheese plate sent KH and Stel to heaven.
Minus San
Picked up San and had a proper good long chat in the hotel room :)
So that was a memorable few days! Reflections up somewhere else. But I can say that while it’s tiring, it was fun and we would do this all over again if there’s another one hahah. Though post-hol blues is no kick - a combination of tiredness and missing all the fun sigh. All our love to the couple, and hoping for more good news in time to come. Golden jubilee long weekend...there is no reason to not go home, really.
Have been dying to go home for a while. After the turbulent Feb-May months, I really needed a break. Even thought of going home in June and probably surprise my family lol but it didn't happen in the end, because my mum had to make a couple of trips back to Malacca to visit my ailing aunt. That coupled with the fact that my sister would be visiting in July followed by parents China trip...August became the only feasible date. And coincidentally there's golden jubilee long weekend and ChewYeu's getting married that weekend too, so all the more reason to go home!
So that was the main agenda for this trip. First F5Sc wedding! Most of us ventured out of Bru during college and uni years, but quite a number of us have returned home and settled down there (even though many of us are still not even PR) but these are our roots! So this time round, about two thirds of the class are able to make it to the dinner including some flying in from overseas. I didn't catch up as much as I imagined..think there's this unfamiliarity after so many years apart but I am glad to see that many things have not changed - most remarkably the friendship forged since Primary School! To see that her bridesmaids team is made up of almost entirely our classmates. Makes me try to picture how it will be like when one of us gets hitched. Glad to make the trip!
