The City That Never Sleeps

Europe 2024: Atas shopping

Day 8 already whew. Sure didn’t feel like it (but I felt it when I am writing ahahah production rate is not as good these days).

Woke up and nope, still cloudy. Which means no activities involving sightseeing, and in any case I’m starting to get the feeling of “oh alright, just another nice mountain/lake”. So plan was to start off with a couple of attractions in the city, then head indoors to a museum. And it’s probably coz of super saver tickets but I distinctly remember that we had a hard 2 hour time limit to explore the museum.

Found a shorter route to Luzern station

Have been seeing this very often so we decided to buy one for breakfast, sort of. So so only.

Morning street views

En route to our first stop of the day

Lion Monument. Tragic story of how the lion died protecting the castle and its owners during the war (? Civil war?) days

This church I think is an attraction too but we didn’t go in.

Off to museum! To be specific it’s the Swiss Museum of Transport or the Verkehrshaus. It was kinda pricey I thought which is why I was a bit on the fence on this one when planning, and I wasn’t planning to spend a lot of time here so it might not be very worth the price. But we didn’t have too many alternatives so ended up biting the bullet and went for it.

And can I just say, best decision ever. I almost didn’t want to leave because I really zoomed through much of the displays, and I could have spent more time on each. The exhibit is structured into largely four zones dedicated to each mode of transport - air, sea, land-roads and land-rail, and I budgeted half an hour per zone and busted the limit easily lol.

Outside the museum. Tickets are a bit pricey actually, about $60 if I recall correctly and probably should spend more time in here to make it worth but too bad.

Towards the first section - air

Models of commercial planes

This was a very interesting exhibit on commercial piloting - the documents they use, the various checklists, etc

Exactly what happens inside the cockpit and all the comms with the ground towers during the one hour flight.

More models! Vintage helicopter models etc

And more commercial planes

Get to enter this old school commercial plane

Off to the sea transport section next, where you see internal workings of a cargo ship

Ship models

This was a very interesting and detailed model

Spent some time watching this

Maybe my least favorite section because sea travel generally isn’t one of my favorites, they also combined it with tourist travel modes such as cable cars

Can you tell what section is next?

I was so excited to see these

First up, car models, you can call up each model to see up close

Section on road safety (hyperventilates)

SEEN AND BE SEEN!

This is on tunnel operations, also very relevant for our work

Construction of the worlds longest road tunnel

Rail section. This was the old Jungfraubahn train (the one we took was very modernized alr)

The longest rail tunnel?

More train models

Went back to the road section because I wanted to try this crash simulator, despite running behind schedule

Oooof

Money and time well spent.

Ok so the two hour does come with a bit of buffer i.e. lunch lol so we ended up sacrificing that a bit since we overstayed at the museum a bit, tapao and ate in train instead but in the process we also fulfilled our mission of carrying one of those large pizza boxes on the go lol. Coz we kept seeing ppl do that.

(Oh and bye Luzern btw)

Back at Luzern station

Train tracks

Got a couple of slices of pizza

And just like that we are down to our last Swiss destination of the trip, and back to civilization in Zurich.

Agenda of the day is really just shopping tbh, with Zurich being much more metro as compared to the other Swiss towns and less of the lakes/mountain sightseeing, even tho we did make our way to Lake Zurich unintentionally. And I didn’t feel like we have much time in Zurich, so after dropping off our luggage we headed out to Zurich’s main shopping street of Bahnhofstrasse.

Zurich HBF

Walking out of the station

Checking in to ibis styles

Room tour

Yes there’s a bit of styles here. Interesting one (including the mirror on the ceiling)

And how the shower area is separated from the main room by just a curtain without doors

Off to do some (window) shopping

Mandatory picture of train station

Bahnhofstrasse

Featuring the pok kai zai

How beautiful will this place be in a couple of days time?

More sights of the most expensive shopping street in the world

Surprisingly forgot about Lindenhof Hill (more on that later)

So this being our last stop at Switzerland it’s also time to make a decision about buying a watch. I’ve been talking about this for a while - in fact since the last time I planned a Switzerland trip - but buying a luxury watch at a country famous for this seems like a rite of passage. So throughout the trip we’ve been visiting watch boutiques, and I’ve been swinging wildly multiple times from “f this let’s do this” to “nahhh I really am not going to be wearing this often enough to warrant the price tag”.

But I guess it takes a bit of push and a nice salesperson who came across as genuine to push me over the edge so yes I did it eventually. Though it also took a walk to Lake Zurich and more sightseeing in the Lindenhof Hill area (and I was so preoccupied that I forgot to go up Lindenhof Hill itself) before heading back to the boutique to seal the deal. I still don’t think it’ll be something I wear even remotely often haha but perhaps just as an investment piece.

Down the street

Street photography is now one of my favourite things to do

Reached the end of the street and Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich

Grossmunster

Munsterbrucke

Shophouses across the river

Random square near Fraumunster

Back at the street and time to make a call

Was there any regrets? Yes, slightly, because after that we realized it’s a few hundred dollars cheaper in Vienna lol but oh well, birthplace hahaha.

Then off to a celebratory dinner before calling it a day hahah. Because it’s also been a while since we had a proper sit in dinner, and technically our last night proper in Switzerland.

I think this was a pork cordon bleu with rosti

Perch fillets. I think we wanted other items but the sauces had beef components so we went for the safe dishes

Very crowded, we were a bit lucky to get a walk in seat but had a 45min dining time limit.

Not bad!

Another mandatory pic

I actually love this massive halls inside a train station
