Taipei 2023: 九份十分

Day 4 is designated 九份 and 十分day!

We debated a bit about hiring a driver for this day via Klook/KKDay which will take us to 野柳 too but I think that is costing us about $40 per pax and I really didn’t fancy interacting with driver much during the journey (even though this is allegedly my mum’s forte and job) so we settled for Uber, which was about an hour drive. Technically still got a driver to interact with so actually I don’t know what I was thinking about ahahah but said driver didn’t talk at all during the ride so.

Reached the entrance to 九份老街 at about 10am which is apparently still early. Most stalls are still setting up, but I think the good thing is that the crowd is very thin at this point so we have an easy stroll along the old street and its slopes. And stopping for brunch too for good measure.

The familiar old street entrance

Not exactly crowded

Third time here, still enjoy looking at all the touristy knick knacks

This chicken dish at our brunch spot was really good

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - this slow pace was actually very enjoyable. Granted it was necessitated by the parents worsened capacity to walk long distances without needing a rest, but I guess we make do with what we can. Which included plenty of breaks for brunch, tea at 阿妹茶樓 etc. And dad was pretty ok with the breaks to catch up on his videos and games.
老字號shops all surviving the pandemic

Good day for sightseeing too

The 民宿 we stayed in 2012 had changed hands

Iconic

First time here, feels touristy but the break was very welcomed

Headed back to the main entrance where the crowd along the way is now borderline intolerable. Uber-ed back to 瑞芳 station, where we were to take train to 十分. Here’s where I need to update myself - 悠游卡is now allowed which I didn’t realise and darted straight towards the ticket vending machines. Oh well.
Train shot at 瑞芳 again

十分was magnificent as usual. We ended up not setting off any 天燈, just watching people do so and hung around the street food stalls for a bit. Then caught the next train back to 瑞芳 hahaha. More of like a been here done that kind of destination for the parents, I feel.

We didn’t set off any, parents don’t buy this gimmick

Never quite get the deal with this bridge

Uber-ed back to Taipei, more specifically straight to 饒河夜市instead of dropping off at hotel and depositing day’s purchases first. Parents gave a feel of “let’s get this over and done with then we can go back to hotel for good” vibe haha.

饒河is easily my favorite 夜市now. Paths are wide enough for walking, waiting time for popular snacks are bearable (or maybe coz we went early, like 6pm). And variety of food is great (even if they start repeating themselves as you go along the street).

Dropping off at the temple, which Uber uncle told us we should go in for a toilet break first lol

At least got breathing space

I think my favorite item from this market

Back to hotel on Uber where parents struck up a conversation with the Uber driver, trying to understand how they work because by this point, every car that we got was in pristine condition, big enough for 4 of us even though we didn’t select the pricier, comfortable option. We thought they had to lease from a standard distributor or something but no, turns out there are just requirements when they signed on and they are quite incentivized to keep their cars in good condition.

And that’s it for the day!
