Europe 2016: London's calling

Headed out early to Gare du Nord for my train to London.
Train was supposed to be at 845am and I lived like 10 minutes away from the station. But read online the night before on how it's better to go early coz immigration queues are usually long. Yep need to clear immigration to get from Paris to London even though both are EU countries. And luckily I had the sense to double check online because even though I reached at about 8am, I just managed to clear immigration in time and had to rush to board the train. Had I not checked I may have happily reach the station at 830am or something whew.
Still got time for a photo though.
Train ride was pretty uneventful. There's a bit of novelty coz the train runs under the English Channel but in truth obviously can't see anything la hahaha. So I kind of slept through the 2 hour + ride.
Can already feel the stark difference between tube stations and Paris metro stations.
Checked in without fuss. Can't find a studio in London but this place looked really nice on Airbnb and one of the reviews said that you get a lot of privacy because you sort of have a bathroom to your own and the owner mostly leaves you to your own device unless you need something so went for it. Yea antisocial that way. So the review was spot on. Had a brief chat with host and his GF or was it sister (because someone else came over a couple of days later and I almost walked into them making out hahahah), then rested a bit before heading out.
My room. Which is strictly speaking not ensuite but as host only uses bathroom in the master, the other bathroom outside is essentially for guests only.

Bathroom
Get access to the rooftop too but that was the only time I went up, though the view is fantastic.
Checked the weather app and knew that this is probably the best weather out of the few days I am in London which means it's a day for sightseeing. So headed over to Covent Garden to look for the Sandemans Walking tour guide hahaha. Had time to grab a quick lunch of fish and chips beforehand too.
Kind of cramped. Not much standing space. And absolutely no mobile signal, even in this age. Wow.
Alighted at Leicester Sq.
Covent Garden is the meeting point!
Tour guide and the ticket.
The National Gallery, one of our first stops.
A series of other stops but didnt take any photos. This is St James Park
Tour finished at about 5pm but got a 意犹未尽 feeling so set about retracing steps again. Plus as entertaining as she was, I felt that she told too many stories (stopped for a good half an hour at St James Park listening to and reenacting a story on King Henry VIII and his many wives, and another 20 minutes outside Buckingham Palace listening to a story of an intruder caught by the Queen herself) and not enough about the places we visit. Wanted to tip £5 but didn't have smaller change and ended up tipping £10 urgh. And much like my sightseeing day in Paris, ended up walking a lot because the things I wanted to see typically not really very 顺路 one. Oh well.
Westminster Abbey
Big Ben nearby. Big Ben is actually the bell that chimes every hour, not the tower.
Into cycling path designs and markings. Job hazard.
Not the best time of the day to get a good photo.
London Eye.
London icons!
Horse Guards Parade
Back to Buckingham Palace
Guards
Queen Victoria Memorial
Long walk back to Trafalgar Sq.
Final stop of the day - Tower Bridge!
Quick dinner from Pret a Manger.
Back to Canada Waters, popped by Sainsbury's downstairs and was impressed by the selection of quick meals hahaha. Vowed to be back to grab something the next day. And called it a day! Too tired. |
