The City That Never Sleeps

Australia 2013: Beach, please

posted : Tuesday, March 18, 2014
So after the excitement that is day 3, I allowed myself to sleep in for the final day in Gold Coast. So I woke up at 9 instead of the ungodly hours of say, 3am hahahaha. And that was only because I was due to check out at 10am...

Flight to Melbourne was at 8++ at night so I still had the whole day to spend in Gold Coast..and luggage needed to stay somewhere. Was hoping I could deposit at the recpetion counter, but was told that they had a luggage storage room. Information sheet also said that they can store luggage at "traveller's own risk". Luggage room was basically an old, empty room without lights, probably one of the unused utilities room, on the second floor and thus out of the sight of the receptionist. So guests can get the key from the owner and leave their luggage in there. I don't know how I manage to leave mine there with a peace of mind, I mean anybody can just pop into the room and take it away...but I couldn't really think of an alternative then and told myself I won't be that suay...

People generally go to Gold Coast for their awesome beaches and throughout my first three days here I never even set foot on the beach! So first thing after I left my apartment was to hit the beach! Not that I was planning to swim (can't swim) or sunbath (probably scare the crowd away) though. Just strolled along the beach, enjoying the breeze and the cool cool cool waves on my feet. Morning crowd was pretty sparse though. Didn't even see many surfers in action.

Can't get enough of the cool cool water.

Beach trip won't be complete without writing on sand.

Hahaha again.

Grabbed a brunch of fish and chips coz it didn't seem right to not eat fish and chips hahah. And australian food portions (or maybe just angmoh food portions) are huge so surely can than till dinner time de. And everybody seemed super generous with fries :s

Only other thing on my agenda is to do a bit of shopping so popped by Harbour Town, about half an hour away from Surfer's. Outlet shopping, basically, and kind of outdoors. And it's a smaller pace than I imagined..spent a good couple of hours there, though only bought two pairs of rip curl slippers that were on sale hahaha. Coz things aren't exactly super cheap and I probably can get them back in sg so didn't feel like buying. Plus I didn't want to carry things around anyway.

Still had an hour or two to kill when I returned to surfers so decided to chill at Cavill. Again. And pop by the beach. Again. Hahaha why does it sound so boring and repetitive?

Lots more people in the afternoon.

Headed back to the hotel to pick up my luggage at about 4, coz the office closes at 430. Repacked slightly then set off to the airport by bus. Uneventful journey made interesting by this woman's verbal exchange with a trio of brainless teenagers who for some unknown reason kept making fun of her :s

Reached airport like 3 hours before my flight..and Gold Coast airport isn't exactly Changi-like in terms of things to do haiz. To make things worse, flight was delayed urgh. Quite funny coz it was supposed to be 835pm, then couple of weeks before they emailed to inform passengers that flight had been brought forward to 825pm. Their acknowledgment link in the email wasn't working so I ignored  it..then they called me up to check if I was aware even though it's only a 10minute difference. After all the trouble they went through, flight actually ended up getting delayed how ironic.

Was planning how to get to my hotel in Melbourne from the Southern Cross station (where SkyBus drops off) and there's a small chance I can make it on the last tram but alas. There's a brief moment of panic when I heard an announcement that one of Virgin Airlines flight to Melbourne was cancelled...thought there may be something going on at Melbourne airport or sth. But no further hiccups and flight departed at about 9.

Gold Coast really had lots to offer (despite my slow final day haha) and people usually go there for a one week trip, which I can't due to my tight schedule so had to remove quite a few things from my list. Though I probably won't return again, think I had quite a good taste of what they have to offer and there are many other places I would love to visit in this world. So yep.

Next up, Melbourne!

Bye GC!
