Blood Donation!

posted : Friday, September 12, 2008
I just came back from my first ever blood donation and I am quite happy I can donate. Haha...(laughs at EiHong who once again failed the pre-donation test.) :P

Its quite funny since I have been looking forward to this since yesterday..duno why la, maybe because it is my first time? Lol.

Anyway after lunch we went down to MPSH4 where the blood donation drive is going on. Luckily for us, since it was during lunch hours so the queue is relatively shorter. First station was registration, where we filled in our details and answered a survey. Technically if you are a virgin you can just skip the fine details and put 'No' for most of the questions since they mostly involved issues about sex...but in the middle of no where some questions like "Are you feeling well today?" will pop up and if you put 'No' also then die..haha. (talking crap oledi. What's wrong with me?)

Next handed in the form to the registration counter where they check your details and stuff, then proceed to the medical check up counter. The lady took my temperature and check my blood pressure, and instead of weighing me she just asked me for my weight. (I guess anyone could tell that I am over 45kg). Next station was blood test station, where the nurse pierced one of my fingers and collected a bit of my blood, and place it in a blue solution that resembles CuSO4 solution. The blood drop coagulates and sank to the bottom. Hmm.. duno what is that for la, maybe shud try to find out soon.

Cleared for donation and joined the queue. At this time there were some filming going on (for educational purposes I presume) and the crew were filming one guy who was apparently donating blood (duno if he really donated or 'show show' only). At first I thought it was just some random donor, then when I sat closer then I realise who he is.

Its Elvin Ng (黄俊雄), Singapore Mediacorp's artist, who had leading roles in serials like Kinship I and II (手足), Happily Ever After (凡间新仙人) and Love @ 0˚C (爱情零度C), starring in this educational video (I think).

Pictures a bit blurr...coz I was too excited!! Joking. Coz my camera not very good la.

He has the honour of being the first artiste I see close up in my 3 years of living in Singapore. :S

So while waiting I listened to songs and watched the poor nurse who was responsible for sucking blood out of him (sorry, poor choice of words) trying to act in front of the camera. Then there was this girl who was giving blood in front of me, at one point (towards the end of her donation) she suddenly started groaning and clutching her chest. She must have lost her senses or something because she actually tried to push the nurse who rushed over to attend to her away, groaning "don't want, don't want...." In the end they manage to calm her down and let her lay flat with her legs raised up (to let the blood from her feet flow back?) That little scene didnt seem to put off anybody from donating blood though.

Eventually it was my turn and I was told to get up the chair (?) which was occupied by Elvin Ng before he left the filming scene. (=S) So I sat there and wait, where a nurse came to check my veins on my right arm. It took her quite some time to find it because, apparently I don't exercise much so my veins are not very visible. (?) Then she marked the position and left to attend to other donors.

I sat there and waited for her to come back, but I think she forgot about me. :( Luckily the nurse who had been involved in the filming just now came over to check. I asked her about the filming just now and she said it was totally not fun at all when you have an "yim chim" (somewhat perfectionist) director and it was quite hard for her to 'act', too. After checking my vein again she declared that it is too 'soft' (?) and checked my left arm instead.

Fortunately the left arm didnt let me down. So she re-marked the position and sent for another nurse to suck my blood. (sorry, what other phrase can you use? draw my blood?) The second nurse passed me some iron tablets, some leaflets and proceed to apply some alcohol to the area where they are going to draw blood. Then she gave me an injection and later attached a tube which leads into a packet and voila! Blood started flowing out of my veins.

I was told to squeeze the stress ball every 5 seconds but I got bored after a while so I took a few photos.

My left arm with blood flowing out of it.

I lost so much blood! AHH!! (being dramatic)

Anyway, for some reason my blood flow is quite fast. I only listened to 3 songs at most and the blood packet is full. The nurse who attended me just now happened to pop by to check on me and was kind of surprised to see that it is full already and hurriedly stop the blood drawing process, and removed the tube. A volunteer then helped me to bandage my arm and sent me off for refreshments.

Ate a packet of Oreo and took back some other cookies, as well as some drinks and a packet of raisins (which is a good source of Iron! ) which I kind of dislike, watched a Mickey Mouse cartoon on YouTube which was playing at the refreshments section, and I was allowed to leave.

Hehe. Blood donation is seriously not a bad experience (except maybe the waiting part) but overall it is kind of fun and it saves people! To quote from the publicity poster, "It is in your blood to save other people!" I think I will definitely go for it again if there are other blood donation drives in the future. :)

Now I hope I don't doze off during Maths Lecture later.
