上菜记(2) - Shifting
posted : Wednesday, February 02, 2022
So I don’t actually have a single shift in date (like one which I packed everything and move one shot), because I reused my plan from the previous round which is to shift everything myself via Tribecar. I only had a rough deadline to adhere to because I wanted to give myself at least a week or more to vacate and clean up my old place before the handover date. Oh and I set an official 入宅 date too after consulting an app on my phone lol, one that I'd roll pineapple and open all doors and windows and boil water and and cook (instant noodles only coz no ingredients in the new place yet) etc etc.
Not the first try, I confess. But a better video and it cant hurt to roll multiple times right. So the same afternoon after cleaning was done was my first round of shifting. Nonessential things have been packed in boxes so it’s about shifting over, and dumping them in the common bedroom first because there’s no furniture for me to unpack them to. Then a second round the week after to shift over even the essential things because I’d have started living there the day after. Round 1! Maybe it’s the age but it was tiring AF. Definitely not as young as I was in 2017. I mean, multiple acquaintances did offer to help (and maybe I should have taken it up) but I am independent that way. And I was a notoriously slow mover (throwback to my uni hall days) so both days I had to extend my Tribecar booking. Picked up some scratches on myself here and there in the process too. So next round…hmm, if it’s shifting for more than one person maybe it’ll be better to hire a mover haha. And to add insult to injury there were casualties during the whole process, which wasn’t unexpected to be honest - I expected some damage to my nanoblock collection but those made it there safely (those that hadn’t broken apart prior to shifting, that is - I accidentally dislodged a shelf while packing and about 4-5 items fell and broke apart on impact, obviously, so had to rebuild those). What didn’t make it there in one piece is my laptop, which fell from waist height from my laptop bag which wasn’t zipped properly and suffered screen damage and dents on the side. Didnt realise how fragile it can be or maybe i just underestimated the height it fell from. But for the first time an extended warranty played its part - HP sent an engineer to my place to fix it (I didn’t even have to send it for repair), and even came a second time to replace the keyboard too after I showed him the dent on his first trip). And it’s on the house (engineer told me damage on my part rightfully is not covered but told me I didn’t have to mention that lol). In between the shifting sessions was all the various delivery and installations - sofa, TV, washing machine, bed, mattress etc, in which almost nobody stuck to their agreed timeslot (sigh) but good thing I was already there most of the time so I can mostly accomodate the last minute changes. Oh and all the Shopee/Lazada deliveries too. Some nights I would make random trips to the place to with some smaller bags which I can carry on a bus ride. By the way - have I mentioned how much I hated commuting in between the two places? There's no direct bus and I had to change bus, sometimes two changes even and worst of all, I never seem to get lucky - I always miss the connecting bus by a minute or less and have to wait 15 minutes for the next one. Zzzz. Bed installation in progress One of the random nights when I shifted something over and while waiting for bus I decided to assemble my dining chair (by then TV and sofa had arrived so at least I had some entertainment) Unpacking took forever though. It kind of stressed me out looking at the mountain of boxes in the common bedroom and living room waiting to be unpacked because it was festive season and I went out to meet friends and all so didn’t have time to unpack. But again, WFH coming to the rescue, helped by the very low workload during festive season so I was able to do unpacking (and furniture assembling) during working hours hahahah. Like, I'll be working, and once in a while I would look up and saw the mess staring back at me, and I'll sigh and attend to it. It still took me almost a week to finish up and make everything presentable (because CVE gang came over for Christmas gathering cum housewarming lol). TV rack assembly, during working hours and sometimes during lunch hour lol The mess in living room Mess in common bedroom Mess in Master Bedroom (ok this wasnt too bad, but its more of to demonstrate the luggage full of clothes which I had yet to unpack) Pics time! I think I did a good job on my own, pats my back. Honestly all the stress that built up over the two months dissipated after the housewarming event when everything is looking nice and presentable. Completed living/dining room Common bedroom - decided to put off buying a single bed for now because I figured it will be a while before anybody gets to come and use it anyway So that’s the end of this journey! So eventful, more eventful than I wished for but such a good learning experience and in the end, I loved the end product so all’s good. Next up - saying goodbye! |
