煮菜记(4) - Handyman

So offshoot from the painting story, I ended up having to engage a handyman too. Fascinated with their job scope actually because it really seems to cover a lot of random things like assembling your taobao furniture lol although I think that is not something I’ll pay for la. If I can handle stuff like de-rusting I probably will do it myself too.
Sent the same few pictures to Winnie’s handyman contact and he gave a quote like “item 1-3 $80”. At which point I almost thought it is similar to the damn painter’s quote so I was almost prepared to confirm with the painter instead. Luckily I went to shower at this point and a shower thought popped into my mind - what if he meant total $80 for 3 items instead of each? So after shower I checked and wah! It’s total, which meant the damn painter tried to overcharge me by 3 times! Handyman some more joked that if it’s $80 for each item he would be rich already (so the damn painter is probably rich). So no reason to not confirm this guy immediately. And it was wise. Vibed with this guy and in no time we were bro-ing lol. I think his work is not the neatest to be honest, which required a second trip to touch up. But like I said, vibes were good and he is a pleasant guy. Asked for advice with some other stuff like the wardrobe door that couldn’t close properly, and he identified the problem but couldn’t fix it as it needed a carpenter, so he offered to help me find one but warned that it wouldn’t be easy coz it’s too small a job for a regular carpenter to take on (they got no time for small jobs it seems). Similar story for my main door which I needed to glue on a replacement veneer strip. One of the works is for plastering this space between the doorframe and wall which for some reason is cracking badly. Dude patched up, but by the next day the cracks have reappeared and required touch up. But after he did it the second time they went away for good. In the end he also became sort of an emergency back up guy to go to - when electrician slyly omitted ceiling fan installation works I went to him again. His charges this time round was slightly higher but I guess I gave it to him coz it’s a separate trip anyway, figured he need to earn back petrol cost too. Little did I know there’ll eventually be another twist here in that the fan tripped the whole house when switched on, but details are in the electrician story - basically I am inclined to agree with him that the electrician screwed up. But even after the electrician introduced a workaround and got the fan to work (albeit without the fan being earthed), I still consulted him and he was very annoyed on my behalf because he believe that it was lack of integrity on the electrician’s end, but he said he’ll leave it to me if I wanted to pursue further, telling me that the unearthed fan may pose some risk but since the parts are plastic they are still safe to touch (and I’m not touching it while it’s switched on anyway). The only part that’s dangerous is the hook but that is not exposed and apparently the current is not very significant to begin with? Ceiling fan installation But my mentally tired self decided to just close this chapter. And I didn’t hear back from him eventually about any carpentry works, so I suppose that’s the end of it. |
