The City That Never Sleeps

Tribecar adventures

So recently discovered this startup called Tribecar, courtesy of colleague OKL.

(It's pronounced as tri-beh-car btw. Not tribe-car as we assumed. Took a while to understand why the staff kept going "tribeca")

It's kind of like car sharing and car rental combined. Or more accurately, car rental with very flexible hours. Car rentals you usually have to rent the car for at least a day maybe, this one gives you the flexibility of one hour if you need to rush down somewhere for a bit. The car sharing bit is more on how it operates - there are cars parked at selected HDB car parks and you can book the car nearest to you, go to the car park and hunt down the car when time comes, unlock the car, hop in and drive off. And return to the same spot when your time is up.

Personally thought it's a cool concept. First application that came to my mind was that this would be really good for joyrides LOL. Or rather joy-drive. There's a security deposit which is refundable should you decide to terminate your membership. No membership fees. Sign up online, go for a compulsory briefing session, and pay the deposit for your account to be activated and you are ready to go. Rates are pretty affordable too, the maximum is $6 per hour and it goes as low as $2 per hour if you book during ungodly hours (like wee hours of a weekday). Pump as much petrol as you need, the policy is that the next driver should not see the low petrol indicator light up when he starts his trip. Take lots of photos before and after your drive to prove that you didn't damage the car during your trip.

Car recognizable with the banner pasted on the windscreen.

Tried twice so far. First time, when my account just got activated so wanted to test it out, booked an hour just for fun. Turns out to be pretty stressful coz I totally overestimated the time I had and had to rush back, reaching the car park 2 minutes late (luckily not late enough to warrant a penalty). Not so lucky the second time coz didn't pump enough petrol and indicator light came on 10 minutes to the end of the trip, had to go back to a petrol station and by the time I returned the car I was about 8 minutes late and kena penalty zzz. Though the next driver was kind of understanding about it (probably coz I pumped enough to cater for his trip too as a compensation). But I also got questioned about a supposed huge dent which luckily I had photos to prove that it was there before I drove.

So far I haven't thought of any applications other than a joy drive heh. If I am meeting friends I don't know if I would consider it. Or maybe when I am shifting house or something (which is probably one off). The limitation is that you have to return the car to the same car park you start the trip obviously because there may be someone who booked the car after you - as opposed to dropping it off at a location convenient for you. Also coz they would have purchased season parking for that one car park only so it has to go back to that car park.

Would recommend the service!
