The City That Never Sleeps

Battle of the hostels

posted : Sunday, August 17, 2008
Went back to McNair yesterday and this is the first time I went back since checking in to RH. So it is inevitable that my mind involuntarily made some comparisons.

vs.

McNair:
- Old building renovated to be a student's hostel.
- 5 people per room and the rooms are small.
- Each person gets a study table, a shelf, a small cupboard (by default, excluding the ones we steal) and a bed whose mattress sinks in after prolonged use.
- attached bathroom and toilet
- air-conditioned
- minimal ventilation
- 8 washing machines, 6 dryers and 8 fridges for the whole hostel.
- Breakfast and dinner everyday and lunches on weekends and public holidays. Mealtimes are never followed.
- Food quality is err..... you know what I mean.
- The famous pool which birthday boys/girls got dunked in.
- Study room cum computer room with 8 computers dominated by Cedars. (update: the study room had been extended and more study tables now)
- 3 TV sets
- Badminton courts and basketball court with lower-than-usual basketball hoops
- curfews which are getting earlier and earlier each year.
- Security guards who do basically everything. They are the gardeners, electricians, etc.
- A certain Mrs. P who makes life difficult for everybody (including herself) and still thinks everybody loves her.
- Minimal hostel activities (but we do celebrate birthdays and national days and hostel outings)
- All sorts of pests (rats, bees, mosquitoes, etc.) and sometimes snakes pay us a visit too.
- Scholar's hostel (so can see people mugging everyday)
- 10 minutes bus ride to school and 30 minute journey back (MRT and walking)
- Basic facilities nearby (10 minute walk), e.g bank, post office, bus stops, MRT station, shops etc
- Guys are not allowed to enter girl's rooms and vice versa
RH:
- Around the same age as McNair I guess.
- 1 or 2 people per room. and the space available per person is a lot bigger.
- Each person gets a L-shaped table, bookshelves with 3 times more space, a large cupboard and a proper bed. For single rooms there are even more storage space.
- no attached bathroom and toilet. One common toilet per floor.
- overhead fans to keep you cool.
- adequate ventilation
- 2 washing machines per common toilet, 5 dryers for the whole hall and 1 or 2 extremely full and smelly fridge per kitchen.
- Breakfast, tea and dinner everyday except saturdays. Mealtimes must be followed strictly. Miss it, then you have to go hungry.
- Food quality is much better and good variety as well
- No computer rooms but there is a library (with few shelves of books) and other rooms such as band room and piano lounge.
- one huge plasma TV set but rarely seen switched on.
- Badminton courts and hard court
- absolutely no curfew
- No security guards
- A certain Mr. L who enjoys sending emails.
- A lot of hostel activities ranging from hall production to Inter-block games to Inter-hall games to Rad Days etc.
- Haven seen any insects crawling around though
- Normal hall where hall activities takes precedence over studying
- 5 minutes walk to lectures (if you are in Engineering)
- Basic facilities nearby (5 minute walk), e.g ATM, post office, bus stops etc. MRT quite some distance away.
- Guys are allowed to enter girl's rooms and vice versa

Which one do I like more? ;P
